After School Care
Hanabi Judo’s After School Care Program offers children a safe, fun, culturally enriching place to do homework and enjoy a few hours after school.
Schedule: Daily during the school year.

What We Offer
School Pick Up
Albany Unified elementary students meet their Hanabi Instructors at school and walk together to the Hanabi Dojo. (Students from outside Albany Unified can arrange their own transportation to Hanabi for after-care.)
Homework Assistance
Students can do their homework, supervised and assisted.
Cultural Activities
Japanese language and culture such as origami, Japanese writing, and Pokemon(!) are offered to enrich your child’s experience.
Physical Activities and Games
Children love – and need – to play. We offer a large padded open space and professional instructors to lead children in fun, active games.
Reading, Play and Art
Hanabi has a library of children’s books, lego, puzzles, and drawing materials as well.
Judo
All after-care kids can take part in our judo classes for free while they are with us. Our Chbi, or pre-judo class, starts at 4:30, allowing our After Care kids to learn how to fall safely, develop balance, coordination and confidence.
The Hanabi Culture
We believe that Hanabi is a big family where we care about everyone and where everyone belongs. “Jita Kyoei,” or Mutual Welfare and Benefit for All, is the motto of judo. Hanabi students and staff demonstrate this by being both supportive and respectful. But we also expect Hanabi to be a fun place: you will find discipline at Hanabi; but you will probably first notice our smiles and laughter.
Head Sensei, Dan Augustine
The head instructor, 6th degree black belt Dan Augustine, won the US Sr. National Championship in 1984 and was the alternate to the 1988 Olympics. But more importantly, he is a father of three children who grew up in the East Bay (two of whom became Hanabi black belts). He has taught in New York, Tokyo and Berkeley. He holds a Master’s Degree in Education and speaks Japanese and Spanish.
