Our Beginning

A Legacy Built On the Mat

Founded in 1965, Hanabi Judo is one of the Bay Area’s most storied judo clubs — and one of its most welcoming.

The Story of Hanabi

花火 — Fireworks Since 1965

Hanabi Judo was established in Albany by Emilio “Mel” Augustine in 1965, making it one of the original judo clubs in the Bay Area. The club’s name — 花火 (Hanabi) — means “fireworks” in Japanese, and its energy, brightness and excitement truly express the spirit of the community.

For over six decades we have been part of the Bay Area, developing not just champions but good people of strength and honor. Today, Head Instructor Dan Augustine (6th Degree Black Belt) carries forward the legacy his father Mel began — the tradition of excellence, warmth and family has never wavered.

Mel Augustine in Black Belt, 1972

Our founder was featured in Black Belt magazine as a probation officer who put troubled kids on the mat instead of in a cell. Six decades later, the same idea still runs the dojo.
