Every Month, Our Students Step Onto the Mat

Hanabi holds an in-class shiai every month — a friendly tournament on our own mats, with classmates watching from the edge. It is how students put what they have learned to the test, in front of the people they train with every week. Press play to see a recent one.

Our Story

More Than a Dojo — A Family Since 1965

Hanabi means “Fireworks” in Japanese — and its energy, brightness and excitement truly express the spirit of our community. For half a century we have been part of the Bay Area, developing not just champions but good people of strength and character.

Founded in 1965 by Mel Augustine (7th Degree Black Belt), Hanabi Judo is one of the longest-running judo clubs in the East Bay. Today, Head Instructor Dan Augustine (6th Degree Black Belt) carries that legacy forward with the same warmth and community spirit.
