From age 3 to adult, we have a class designed specifically for you. Every program is structured, safe and built around real judo technique.

Chibi Judo helps children develop in a fun, playful way. We play games, sing songs and learn the language of Japan. Our emphasis is on culture — everyone plays together regardless of ability.
We believe that by creating a positive learning environment we can help every child learn judo, be kind and love one another. We say “arigatou” (thank you), “hai” (yes) and “ganbatte” (do your best)!
We start by learning our names in Japanese, then move on to movement exercises, tumbling and simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. Culture sits at the centre of it: we play games, sing songs and speak Japanese — nete (lie down), tonde (leap), raion (lion). We bow politely to Sensei and to one another. At Hanabi, respect comes as naturally as smiling.

Oyako offers children from the age of two an active judo learning experience. Working together with their parent, young Oyako students start with a focus on safety and quality rather than formal judo technique.
There will be falling and getting up, holding and being held, following and leading — and always, always the joy that comes from doing something active and fun as a family.
From the age of two. Children work together with their parent — starting with a bow, learning to fall safely, singing enthusiastically, speaking Japanese and following instructions like a real judo player. There are times when our little ones do not participate perfectly; patience, understanding and our experienced support help them learn and grow.

Hajime (Beginning) Judo starts students on the path to real judo — throws, falls, grips and groundwork in a structured, encouraging environment. Belt ranking gives students clear goals to work toward.
Every class finishes with games that reinforce techniques and create lasting friendships on the mat.
Tumbling, jumping and running warm us up before we practise our ukemi, or falling techniques. Hajime students learn to fall safely, effortlessly and without discomfort. Judo lets a smaller person control an opponent who is bigger and stronger: we learn to hold with kesa-gatame (scarf hold) and we practise throws where our opponent can be flipped upside down — on Sensei. Every class finishes with games that build coordination, balance and laughter, and we say arigotoh (thank you).

Honto (Real) Judo classes allow students not just to learn judo but to actually use their judo skills. In this class it is common to feel yourself flying through the air — and coming back for more.
Instruction takes a careful, supportive approach so all students use their techniques correctly and safely. The environment is a great combination of togetherness and friendship.
Skills here are sharpened standing (tachi-waza), on the mat (ne-waza) and especially through extended free practice (randori). The exercises are a little more intense and the games a little more physical. Instructors keep a careful, supportive eye on every student so that techniques are used efficiently and safely. Tournament competition is not required — but we want every student who chooses to compete to have the skills to do it well. Made up almost entirely of students at this level, Team Hanabi placed third in the State of California.

Otona (Adult) Judo meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7:00 – 8:30 PM, at the Albany dojo. Your first class is always free.
