The Passing of Yosh Uchida Sensei

Yosh Uchida, San Jose State University Judo Coach, passed away on June 27 at the age of 104. Uchida Sensei coached at SJSU for over 70 years and was my father’s sensei at San Jose State in the late 1950’s and early ’60’s. Under his leadership San Jose State produced dozens of Olympians including America’s first world champion, Mike Swain, who took a bronze medal in Seoul in 1988. (I was alternate Olympian that year after losing to Swain.)  Uchida Sensei was a 10th degree black belt, recipient of the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan and the building where judo is located at San Jose State is named “Uchida Hall” in his honor. He was a friend and inspiration to all of us in the Bay Area, and US, judo community.

This week we are celebrating Tanabata, the star festival, by decorating bamboo with our wishes. Next week is Super Pokemon where we draw and create our Pokemon and then make Pokeballs in our Albany, Piedmont and Alameda camps. Remember: all Hanabi Judo members get 1/2 off of their monthly tuition if they enroll in a week of Hanabi’s Pokemon Summer Camp during any summer month this year.
