Bay Area Judo Championships

On Saturday, August 3, Hanabi had 13 students competing at the Bay Area Judo Championships and we finished with 4 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze medals. We were especially proud of our newer competitors:  Desmond and Ren,  who fought well in spite of being nervous.  Ren even got second and brought home a silver medal! Charlee, Keiden, Shuhan and Ulysses all earned Ist place, Gold Medals. Congratulations to all!

Dan Augustine Back from Olympics

I traveled in Europe from July 20 through July 31 and had the opportunity to see the Belgium National Junior Judo Team and the Olympics in Paris.  My Paris Olympic experience started out with a wet, 5 hour opening ceremony on the Seine river and finished with a party on the Eiffel Tower but my most amazing experiences were the two days I spent at the judo competition.  The judo was superb and it always amazes me the number of countries around the world – whether its Uzbekistan, Canada or Japan – with strong players. But what really impressed me was the emotional energy shown by the spectators from France and around the world who were at the Champ de Mars Arena. People really love judo and they shout and sing and dance to show their support. I don’t think I could have handled more than two days: it was exhausting!

After-School Care at Hanabi Judo

Beginning in August Hanabi will offer after-school care and pick up for students from TK to 5 at Albany’s Marin, Cornell and Ocean View Elementary schools as well as for students in Berkeley and El Cerrito schools.  In our after-school care program the kids will have study time, physical activities and cultural experiences all with Hanabi’s emphasis on respect, discipline and fun!

New Phone Number

Hanabi has a new phone number: 510-604-6640. We are using this right now.
