Our nationally-ranked competition team. Participation is by invitation only.
Our Belief
“We believe that we can achieve.”
The goal of Team Hanabi is the development of our judo students. Expectations differ by age, but one principle holds for everyone: we show our belief in ourselves by always trying our best.
The purpose of the team is an enriching experience — the satisfaction of hard work, the challenge of competition and the deepening of friendships. Every member is expected to both win and lose matches; both are experiences that build character.
Training
The commitment
Team practices are attended every week.
Developmental (6–9): at least three workouts a week, including Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Youth (10 and above): four trainings a week — Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Tuesday or Thursday recommended but not required.
If an athlete cannot attend, they contact Sensei themselves. Injured members still attend practice, without regular training.
Team members attend the tournaments and training sessions listed on the Calendar of Events.
Coaches: Yurii Buhrov, Dan Augustine, Chris Jones and Hayato Nagashima, with other coaches helping through the season.
For Parents
How families support the team
Parents are responsible for supporting, transporting and loving their team members.
Parents do not coach their own children, and do not question them on technical or training issues.
Technical and training questions go to the coaches and senseis.
At competitions, team members stay with the coaches and the team — warming up and staying focused matters.
If you cannot do everything: tell Sensei Dan Augustine and we will work with you. Persistence is one of the strengths we build in our athletes, so leaving mid-season is a serious disappointment — but talking to us always comes first.
