Kokushikan University, the “Notre Dame” of Japanese college judo, was with us this past week Wednesday for practice and Saturday for our In-Class Shiai. Having 18 Japanese black belts playing the “crab-catchers” game on Wednesday with our little ones was fun but having them join us as part of our team tournament – with over forty other Hanabi students – was amazing. So much energy! And then we all ate pizza and pasta salads together during our pot-luck. It was a truly memorable occasion.
Twenty Hanabi students and eight more of our Kokushikan friends attended the Palo Alto Tournament this past Sunday. The Kokushikan students displayed beautiful, technical judo as they dominated the black belt divisions. Our Hanabi students didn’t do bad either, as we earned 10 medals including 4 gold for Juliessa, Shayna, Ren and Kohki. Congratulations to everyone and special thanks to all of the families!
On Saturday, February 28, Team Hanabi will be visiting Cahill’s Judo Academy in San Bruno, CA. My father helped build the current Cahill’s dojo in the 1950’s and I trained there myself when I was competing in the 1980’s. It’s always fun to visit our judo friends.
