On August 15 we will be hosting our monthly in-class “Shiai” or tournament. Our little Chibi and Hajime students will be competing in Sumo at 9:55 while our bigger, Honto students, will be taking part in a real judo team tournament at 11:00. Please come and enjoy the competition and the energy!

This past Thursday, August 6, Hanabi attended a training session with America’s first world champion, AnaMaria Del Mars, at Lakeridge Judo. (She is also well known as Ronda Rousey’s mother.) Lanny Clark and Billy Worthington Senseis, who Dan Augustine has known for 55 years, were kind enough to invite us. We learned Mars Sensei’s own kouchi-gari makikomi. Learning with friends is one of judo’s greatest benefits.
There are two tournaments in August that we encourage our Honto students to attend. Scholar’s Academy Tournament will be in Brentwood on August 23 and will be especially appropriate for our younger students with less experience. The Bojuka Ryu Tournament in Seaside near Monterey will be a good challenge for all of our competitors.

On Sunday, September 13, Hanabi will be participating at the East Bay Tournament at El Cerrito High School. Last year we had 25 students compete and we finished with 7 gold, 8 silver, 2 bronze and were ranked the third best dojo in Northern California!
