Every year Nanka, Hanabi’s yudanshakai (black belt association), recognizes one student from each club for their outstanding performance. Nanka was founded in 1928 and is the largest yudanshakai in the country so this is a very prestigious award. For her many outstanding performances, including a first place finish at the Youth Nationals in Wichita, KS., Ren S.M. was chosen as Hanabi’s Nanka Judoka for 2026. Congratulations Ren!

This summer several Hanabi students are visiting the home of judo: Japan. Katarina was in the Kansai region and worked out two days at the Osaka Kodokan. Hiroshi and Mei are in Tokyo where they will visit the Kokushikan students who did a homestay with them. They will also have lunch with our former instructor Rei Sensei who returned to Japan in February. Sean is in Japan with his mother, visiting his relatives. Our little Kazu, who is from Japan, has returned home for the summer and will be back to Hanabi in the Fall. If you are going to Japan let us know.
Hanabi will be closed on Saturday July 4 in recognition of Independence Day.
