Hanabi’s Summer PokeCamp, our 11 weeks of Pokemon-filled adventure in Albany, Piedmont and Alameda, has a new counselor: Mayra M. Mayra has worked in the Albany schools at both Cornell and Albany Middle. She is a bilingual Spanish speaker who also has a 6 year old who we hope to see in our Hajime Class soon. Welcome Mayra! First session starts on June 6.
May’s In Class Shiai (tournament) will be on Saturday, May 30 and we will be having a pot-luck! Our little Chibi and Hajime students will be doing a sumo competition at 9:55 followed by our Honto students in the real team competition at 11:00. Everyone is welcome to bring a dish to share for our pot-luck after. Our Pot-Lucks are some of our favorite activities so please bring family and friends!
May is not just promotion month but the one month of the year we promote black belts. We have two 2026 candidates: Marty and Charlee. The belt promotion ceremony will begin on Wednesday, May 27, at 6:45 pm with Marty and Charlee performing the “Nage no Kata” or forms of throwing. Come and watch! Shima promotions will be $35 and new belts will be $50.
If you are going outside the country – or around the country – this summer let us know and we will find you a judo club to visit. Judo people are always happy to welcome visitors. Travel is fun but it is even more fun if you can make new judo friends along the way.
