Last Friday, November 21, we had a wonderful In-class shiai (tournament) attended by over 40 of our students from not just Hanabi but from Piedmont and Madera Elementary in El Cerrrito as well. The Sumo was intense with Noa and Khaknazar going for minutes in one marathon match. Ultimately our little five year old Ethan earned first place. Our Honto students’ tournament had four teams, each with members as young as 5 and as old as 17, battling it out. The special award for best technique went to Ajax with a wonderful “tani-otoshi” (banana slip) throw and the spirit award went to Nevan and Shuhan, both of whom had to fight multiple matches with bigger and more experienced players. Congratulations to all!

During the month of November we will be giving out Hanabi’s “Golden Gift Cards.” We will be handing them out to our members who can then gift them to a friend for a free month of judo. They are beautifully printed in both English and Japanese. We have already begun welcoming some of our Golden Gift Card recepients to Hanabi.
Hanabi will be hosting a week of “PokeCamp” in Albany during winter break from December 29-January 2. Like our popular summer camp, we will have judo and art activities – such as origami and anime – related to Pokemon.
