Sunday, September 13 was a busy day with 22 Hanabi students competing at El Cerrito High and about 200,000 people walking by our booth on Solano Ave. Our competitors did fine with Hanabi collecting three golds – Kevin K., Ajax and Sally – 8 Silvers and three bronze medals. The booth was fun with Robert, Marty Sensei and myself – supported by many Hanabi students – talking to people and doing demonstrations.
LaJohnica, center, with college friends in front of the Monterey Aquarium.
As the school year gets back into gear we have several Hanabi kids who are now college students for the first time. LaJohnica, who was a 2026 Hanabi Team member and Sempai, is attending Cal State Monterey Bay. She is trying surfing, soccer, water-polo, piano and making lots of friends including several from Japan. In fact she is studying Japanese and hopes to study abroad there!
September 19-20 is the San Jose Open and at least 13 Hanabi competitors will join 1000 others from across California in this national point tournament.
September is promotion month and all students will be individually tested over the course of the month. Shima promotions will be $35 and new belts will be $50. The belt promotion ceremony will be on Wednesday, September 26, at 6:45 pm. Come and watch!
